About three years ago, we started helping the Dingxi church buy a large courtyard for their church. Since that time, we have also helped them establish and build a meeting point and two standard size classrooms. These facilities are used as a training center from which they operate training classes for people that come from 7-8 of the nearby counties.
Once the training classes began, it could not stop. The requests to participate in the training classes came flooding in from the surrounding areas. As a result, four dormitories and one office were built on top of the classrooms. Inevitably, the training classes grew in size.
Right now, the training center lacks teachers and funds. Dingxi is a famous but poor county due to its arid climate. East Gates has provided invaluable support in the past three years but in order to meet the training demands of carrying forward the Gospel, we will have to allocate greater funds in this region.
The Gospel seems to be progressing and moving forward in these nearby areas as well. It's unfortunate they don't have qualified lay pastors like Rev. Han who is a capable and experienced worker to lead and guide them. His background as a mechanical engineer is rare in the area. Thankfully, the local Christian leaders have the same heart as Rev. Han so he is able to give them lots of help and guidelines on many topics.
We also went to Longxi County which is east of Dingxi County. The distance between these two counties is less than 100 kilometers. Even though it's relatively close, the Jianyi highway that connects the two regions is filled with curves and dips as it rises and falls traversing through a major gorge. Rev. Han, who accompanied us in visiting our brothers and sisters in Longxi County, got very sick on the way since he wasn't used to the rough terrain. Such are the challenges that come with visiting and serving local church members in the area. |
