As we all know, there have been countless books written on China. In this section we hope to acquaint you with just a few books and writings that will provide greater insight towards understanding China and the role of religion in the lives of its people. Some of the writings may be out of print or may have been published a number of years ago, nevertheless, they can still be found at a local university library or other research center. They will prove useful to academians, scholars or sinologists.
If there are books, journals or articles you feel that would enhance this list, please contact us so we may share them with others.
God's Chinese Son - The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom of Hong Xiuquan
By Jonathan D. Spence
Jonathan D. Spence, the Yale University historian, has with his rapidly accumulating books emerged as the preeminent Western literary historian of China. . . . His new book, in which he recreates the spiritual world that nurtured one of China's most remarkable megalomaniacs, continues and enlarges on this wonderful body of work. Hon Xiuquan was the founder of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, the rebel movement that seized a power base in southern China in the mid-1850s and provoked the ruling Qing Dynasty into a terrible, decade-long struggle. . . . The Taiping Rebellion, as Mr. Spence puts it, was an event "as strange as any to be found in Chinese history"--or, for that matter, in global history--and God's Chinese Son is to a great extent about that strangeness. . . . Mr. Spence's account . . . is not merely about an odd moment in history, a strange man and a strange movement. One of its many virtues is that it puts a great deal about China into fascinating perspective.
Christianity in China from the mid-eighteenth century to the present
(out of print)

Edited by Daniel Bays
This unique work will force a reassessment of many common assumptions about the relationship between Christianity and modern China. Despite the conflicts and tension that often have characterized relations between Christianity and China, indepth historical investigation reveals that for the past two centuries or more, Christianity has been putting down roots within Chinese society and is still in the process of doing so. Research effort is China-centered and draws on Chinese sources, including government and organizational documents, private papers and interviews.
The New History of China
By John Fairbanks and Merle Goldman
The late John King Fairbank was the West's doyen on China, and this book is the full and final expression of his lifelong engagement with this vast ancient civilization. This book remains a masterwork without parallel. It is a concise and authoritative account of China and its people over four millennia. The distinguished historian Merle Goldman has brought the book up to date with a chapter on events in the post-Mao period and a new preface and epilogue. He provides a detailed account of the wide array of social, economic, cultural, and even political activities (**) that have taken place in China over the past two decades.
